Difference between Java platform and other platforms?

What is the main difference between Java platform and other platforms?

The Java platform differs from most other platforms in that it's a software-only platform that runs on top of other hardware-based platforms.
The Java platform has three elements:

   1. Java programming language
   2. The Java Virtual Machine (Java VM)
   3. The Java Application Programming Interface (Java API)
