Clean Code for SE Rankings

Do you think cleaning up code will improve Search Engine Rankings?

I have seen sites with horrible code ranked well so not sure if it really matters in my opinion. You always hear people who say you should fix it, but when I see some sites having bad looking code and high rankings then I am a bit skeptical. Might be wrong, but still have my doubts.

Not particularly.. But you should make the CSS and Javascripts external... And I guess analytics code or other webstats should be placed at the bottom part of the codes...
