I want to start submitting my site to directories.
How do I distinguish between the ones that are good against the ones that suck big time so I don't waste what little time I have?

Page Rank, thats all that matters. If the directory is page rank 5+ then you must submit your site no matter what (assuming its free or really cheap). Directories get your site more backlinks and that in turn leads to more traffic.

Criteria for selecting a web directory

-The directories should be maintained up-to-date, weeding out unwanted data

-Directories should use optimized search techniques

-Search directories should have classifications to suit the needs of the business

-Directories should be well known and will be used by web users

Don't submit in those directories which added few link in categories because it shows directly that they do not update the site with the new links.

A lot of people only check the PR for the front page, though. You need to check inside where your site link will actually reside. If the front page is PR 4 but the inside category page is only PR 0, the link won't really be doing you any good.

PageRank is not priority for me..If a directory can give me any visitor to my site, then I will happily submit my site in that directory. Otherwise, it will be useless to me.
