What is loopback address?

Can anybody tell me, what is loopback address? why it is used?
Is it important?

The IP address 127.0.0.1 is known as the loopback address for a computer. This address is used with the PING command to test TCP/IP on a computer. It uses a loopback driver to reroute the outgoing packets back to the source computer. It is most important thing.
