Is Blog Commenting Still Alive? (Just Curious.........)

Question

Hello,

I have heard of people commenting on blogs and then leaving their website URL. Is this still a viable solution to getting backlinks?

Obviously you wouldn't just spam blogs, you would make useful comments....but the question remains............

does it still work?

I can only tell for WordPress-Blogs. By default, they have rel="nofollow" on comment-links.

But many, many blogger do use a "DoFollow"-Plugin, which removes these tags from links, so they will work as any other backlink.

But, NEVER, NEVER fall into comment-spamming on blogs. These links won´t even last long enough for any search Engine to spider them.
